East Ham Conservatives have passed a motion to support the Committee system as an alternate to the Mayoral system of local governance, in Newham.
Following a resolution by Newham Council on 21 October 2020, the two options available are:
Directly elected Mayor – where resident’s vote for a Mayor at the ballot box or;
A Committee system where power and responsibility are shared by Councillors in different committees.
The Mayoral system is not working for Newham. We have seen too much power in one office leading to decisions being taken without proper public consultation or concerns taken into account and Councillors having little or no executive powers except to ask questions, delay some changes by a few weeks or to reject the Mayor's budget.
Under the Committee system power and responsibility are shared by Councillors in different committees creating a more open and transparent decision-making process less reliant on one person.
East Ham Conservatives believe to have an open and transparent Council, we must be able to hold all elected Councillors to account.
On 6th May 2021, Newham, we ask you to vote with us for the Committee system.
